FAQ:

Will a doula make my partner feel unnecessary?

No, doulas are there to support and encourage both the mother and her partner. Having a doula present often puts the partner at ease, making it easier to focus their attention on the labouring mother.

Do doulas perform any medical tasks?

No, a doula will not do anything medically related to your care. She is strictly there to provide continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother and her partner.

Does a doula make decisions on my behalf?

A doula will not make any decisions or intervene in her clients clinical care.  However a doula can remind her client of questions or wishes she may have.

Do doulas only take clients who are wanting to have a natural unmedicated labour and delivery?

No, a doula is there to support her clients wishes, what ever they may be.

Are doulas covered by BC med?

No, unfortunately doulas are not covered by BC med and are paid directly by the client.

How much does a doula cost?

The cost of a doula varies from doula to doula. Since it is considered private health care there are no set guidelines for what doulas can charge.

Do doulas work only with midwives?

No, since doulas are hired privately by the client they work for the client no matter if it's a doctor or midwife, home or hospital planned birth.

What if I'm having a cesarean section?

Whether you are having a planed cesarean or an unplanned one a doula can support both you and your partner through this sometimes scary and very emotional time. Since most doulas have had the opportunity of experiencing cesarean sections at one time or another, she will be able to explain to you and your partner what to expect and help you prepare mentally for it.
